| AD 1184 | Azuma Kagami (Mirror of the East) | On the 4th day of the 2nd month, the Taira gathered tens of thousands of troops along the Saikaidō and Sanindō roads and built a fortress at Ichi-no-tani on the border of Settsu and Harima. That day was the third anniversary of the death of Sōkoku Zenmon (Kiyomori), so they held a memorial service. |
| AD 1184 | Azuma Kagami (Mirror of the East) | At dawn on the 7th day of the 2nd month, Yoshitsune split off about seventy picked horsemen and reached Hiyodorigoe, the mountain behind Ichi-no-tani. Kumagai Naozane and Hiyama Sueshige circled around the front route and attacked, proclaiming themselves the vanguard. Taira men Hida Kagetsuna, Etchū Morituji, Kazusa Tadamitsu, and Akushichibyōe Kagekiyo met them with twenty-three riders, opening the wooden gate. Soon many others, including Noriyori, rushed up, and the two armies mixed in fierce fighting. |
