In the eighth month Cao Cao reached Tongguan and camped facing Ma Chao and others across the pass. Secretly he sent Xu Huang and Zhou Ling with four thousand troops to cross at Puban and camp in Hexi. In the intercalary month, when Cao Cao left the pass and crossed north, he stayed alone with a hundred-odd guards at Nan'an to cover the rear, and Ma Chao attacked with over ten thousand horsemen, arrows falling like rain.
八月，操至潼關，與超等夾關而軍。
